How to Write a Resume With Zero Work Experience

Every resume advice article assumes you have something to trim down. Nobody tells you what to do when the problem is the opposite — when you open a blank “Work Experience” section and genuinely don’t know what goes there.

Here’s the thing nobody says clearly enough: recruiters hiring freshers already know you don’t have work experience. That’s not a secret you’re trying to hide. What they’re actually checking for is whether you can structure information, follow through on something, and communicate clearly — and all three of those can come through just as well from a college project as from a job.

What actually goes in that space

• Academic projects, described the same way you’d describe a work achievement — what you built, what tools you used, what the result was. “Built a hostel mess billing app used by 300 students, cutting manual bill generation by 10 hours a month” reads like real experience, because it is.
• Internships, even short or unpaid ones. Two weeks counts. Don’t undersell it by leaving it off because it “wasn’t a real job.”
• Coursework that’s actually relevant, named specifically — not “various subjects,” but the 2–3 courses that connect most directly to the role.
• Certifications and self-learning — an online course you finished, a certification you earned. This is often the only signal a recruiter gets that you’re serious about the field, so don’t bury it at the bottom.
• Leadership in college clubs or events, if it’s genuinely substantial — organizing a fest, running a student chapter. Skip it if it’s thin; padding is easy to spot.

What to leave out: generic soft-skill lists (“hardworking, team player, quick learner”) with nothing backing them up. Every fresher resume has these, which means they carry zero information. If you want to claim you’re a team player, show it — “Led a 4-person team to a top-10 finish at a hackathon” says the same thing without asking anyone to take your word for it.
